'Turkish gov't backed extremists'

The IHH operatives maintained close ties with Erdogan, report says.
A report released this week by the Intelligence and Terrorism
Information Center (ITIC) said new details have emerged which show how
approximately 40 operatives from the Turkish Islamist IHH organization
carefully prepared a violent ambush on navy commandos last week on
board the Mavi Maramara ship, and acted with the full backing of the
Turkish government.

The IHH operatives were armed with knives, axes and other weapons,
communicated with one another using walkie talkies, set up a control
room onboard the ship, and maintained close ties with Turkish Prime
Minister Tayyip Erdogan, the report said.

In addition, the Mavi Maramara ship was purchased by the IHH from a
major shipping company owned by the Istanbul Municipality, which is run
by the ruling AKP party, it has emerged.

The ITIC said its report was based on an initial analysis of
statements taken from passengers onboard Mavi Marmara after it was
towed to the port of Ashdod last week, as well as findings from
computers seized by the IDF from IHH members.

"The operatives, who acted according to a clearly-defined internal
hierarchy, boarded the ship in the port of Istanbul without undergoing
a security inspection as opposed to the other passengers, who boarded
in Anatolia after a full inspection," the report said.

"The IHH operatives' preparations included handing out walkie-talkies
as they boarded the ship, taking over the upper deck, setting up a
situation room for communications, and a briefing given to the
operatives two hours before the confrontation by IHH head Bülent
Yildirim, who was on board the ship and commanded his men," it
continued.

Close relations between IHH and Erdogan

The men were armed large quantities of knives, axes, metal cables,
metal pipes used as clubs, wrenches, and other weapons, the report
said. "They were also equipped with box cutters which had been
prepared on the upper deck in advance," it added.

"The passengers, including the IHH operatives, stated that there were
close relations between the organization and Turkish Prime Minister
Tayyip Erdogan and that the Turkish government was involved in
preparations for the flotilla," the report asserted.

A journalist onboard the Mavi Marmara, described as having good links
with the heads of the Turkish government and Bulent Yildirim, head of the
IHH, had stated, "The flotilla was organized with the
support of the Turkish government and Prime Minister Erdogan gave the
instructions for it to set sail. That was despite the fact that
everyone knew it would never reach its destination," according to the
report.

Files found in laptops seized from IHH members contained a letter
written in Turkish from IHH head Bülent Yildirim to Turkish President
Abdullah Gül. The letter requested Gal's assistance in efforts to
release an IHH operative, named as Izzat Shahin, from an Israeli
prison.

Sahin was arrested by Israeli security forces in the West Bank on
April 27 on suspicion transferring cash to Hamas under the guise of
charitable aid. He has since been deported from Israel "at the request
of Turkish officials," the report added.

Mavi Marmara purchased from AKP-run municipality of Istanbul

A second computer file showed that the "IHH purchased the Mavi Marmara
ship from a Turkish company called IDO... which was founded in 1987 by
the city of Istanbul."

" IHH acquired the Mavi Marmara ship from the AKP-run
municipality of Istanbul. It is not conceivable that the IHH's Gaza
operation could have been carried out absent high-level government
sanction," wrote Svante Cornell, a Swedish security expert who
specializes in Eurasia, in an article published on Monday.

Cornell, of Stokholm's Central Asia-Caucus Institute, said the IHH was
"an example of how NGOs are used in the foreign policy sphere,"
adding, "The IHH operates joint projects with the Turkish Agency for
International Development, and is reported to have been used by the
government in order to shore up Turkey's position in northern Iraq by
distributing aid to populations there. The IHH has its origins in the
Orthodox Islamic Milli Görüs movement, from which the AKP
organizationally split in 2001."

"As such, the IHH is known as a dyed-in-the-wool Islamist movement,
which has been suspected and investigated repeatedly for alleged
involvement in arms shipment to Islamic forces in various conflicts,
such as Afghanistan and Bosnia. Leading former French counter-terror
magistrate Jean-Louis Bruguière has repeatedly testified that the IHH
had ‘clear, long-standing ties to terrorism and Jihad', including ties
to Al Qaeda in the late 1990s," Cornell added.

Ely Karmon, a senior researcher from the Herzliya-based Institute for
Counter-Terrorism, told The Jerusalem Post that since coming to power,
the AKP party has worked repeatedly to assist the IHH. After being
elected into office in 2001, the AKP government ended a major legal
investigation into the IHH which had begun 1996 and examined
suspicions that the organization transferred weapons and other aid to
terrorist organizations around the world, Karmon said.

In January, the IHH helped organize a convoy to Gaza which became
stranded at El-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula after being denied entry
into Gaza by Egypt, "Turkey enacted major pressure on Egypt to let
the convoy into Gaza. The Egyptians eventually agreed," Karmon added.
An Egyptian soldier was killed during clashes between members of the
convoy and the Egyptian security forces.

Last week, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) released
footage of statements made by Bulent Yildirim, head of IHH, in Gaza
in February 2009.

During the speech, which was filled with references to "martyrdom,"
Yildirim said, "All the peoples of the Islamic world would want a
leader like Recep Tayyip Erdogan."

US twists Israel's arm to placate Erdogan, destabilize Netanyahu
DEBKAfile Special Report June 9, 2010, 3:30 PM (GMT+02:00)

VP Joe Biden and Mubarak discuss ending Gaza siege and Netanyahu government

After eight months of back-breaking work, the American military engineers helping Egypt build a steel anti-smuggling wall along the strategic Philadelphi Route dividing Gaza from Sinai were suddenly recalled, debkafile's military sources report - signaling the collapse of Egypt's blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Washington thus abandoned its half-a-billion dollar investment in the joint Egyptian-Israeli siege project.
Also Wednesday, June 9, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu again dispersed his inner cabinet without a decision after three days of chewing over various formats for an impartial probe of Israel's commando raid of the Turkish-led blockade-busting flotilla of May 31.
Washington's insistence on attaching international "teeth" - and not just American observers - to the probe has stalled Israel's acceptance. debkafile's political sources report that for Netanyahu as well as the defense minister Ehud Barak who ordered and scripted the raid, acceptance of a broad international inquiry as demanded by the UN secretary general and Turkey would be suicidal in domestic political terms.
Even full status for American panel members would for the first time give Washington a say in determining the political fate of the witnesses called, i.e. Netanyahu and Barak, first and foremost.

What US president Barack Obama did this week was to go back to his confrontational posture against the Israeli prime minister, at the very moment that Israeli leaders had their backs to the wall against a worldwide onslaught over the flotilla incident orchestrated from Ankara and Tehran.
Washington has now set its face on a new track: salvaging its ties with Turkey by burning the Netanyahu government. Gone is the well-publicized conciliatory rhetoric from the president, the vice president, secretary of state and chief of staff (who brought to his son to Jerusalem for his bar mitzvah) of the past few weeks.
In the absence of an Israeli demand to focus the inquiry on Ankara's "aid" flotilla project, it will not be hard to single out the culprits for taking the rap - Netanyahu as prime minister and therefore ultimately responsible, and his Defense Minister Barak, the solo performer.
Barak asked no one before ordering chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi and the generals to go ahead with the raid of the six-vessel flotilla, after no more than a cursory word with the prime minister who was then visiting Canada. He did not put members of the security-political cabinet in the picture, or even Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon who was standing in for Netanyahu.
All the same, none of the ministers are in a hurry to endorse a probe that might fatally destabilize the government they serve. debkafile's Washington sources report that Obama administration is also delaying a decision in order to punish Netanyahu and please Erdogan. He also hopes to use the controversy over the inquiry as a lever to free Hamas (which is incidentally listed by the US as a terror group) of the Israeli blockade.
Washington has already made its first move to that end by recalling the US army engineers building Egypt's siege wall during Vice President Joe Biden's talks with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak at Sharm el Sheikh and meetings with officials in Cairo Tuesday and Wednesday, June 8-9.
Reporting to the Vice President, the American engineers' commanders and their Egyptian military colleagues painted a bleak picture of the troubles dogging their efforts to building a steel wall for blocking the arms-smuggling tunnels into Gaza. They reported they had thwarted at every turn by amas engineers, actively assisted by Iranian, Syrian and Hizballah experts, who had managed to infiltrate the Gaza Strip through the contraband tunnels. Hamas buried giant burners 18 meters below the surface of the sand to melt the steel wall's foundations; its operatives then made off with the steel plates and used them to build their own fortifications.
During his talks in Cairo, Biden decided to give up on that project as well as another in the planning stage: A huge pump and pipeline for flooding the tunnels with Mediterranean water. The Vice president and Egyptian officials ended up discussing re-opening the Gaza crossings for people and goods and using European and Egyptian monitors to filter out weapons and terrorists from shore stations.
debkafile's military sources report this plan harks back to the failed arrangements brokered by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2005 after Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip and which never worked. The European monitors fled their posts after Hamas and other radical Palestinian groups started shooting at them. The situation now is even more dangerous, because foreign monitors would have to contend additionally with the new al Qaeda cells which have since sprung up in the southern Gaza Strip.
What Biden is proposing now is to virtually abandon US and Egyptian attempts to block the arms smuggling tunnels altogether - a proposal, debkafile's military sources predict, will bring to an end the Israel-Egyptian blockade of Gaza and allow Hamas to resume its unfettered arms imports through those tunnels.
In those circumstances, the pressure on Israel to end its sea blockade will be unrelenting. The Netanyahu government may have no option but to compromise by agreeing to let cargo ships, including Iranian vessels, through, with European monitors stationed on Gaza's shore to inspect incoming freights.
As recently as Sunday, Netanyahu vowed not to allow an Iranian port to be established in the Gaza Strip. By Wednesday, he looked as though he would have to eat his words.

Abbas meets Obama in Washington
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
06/09/2010 20:31

"The tense situation in the Middle East is unsustainable."
WASHINGTON - The tense situation in the Middle East is "unsustainable" and a better approach is needed in Gaza said US President Barack Obama on Wednesday after meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Obama also predicted "real progress" in coming months in US efforts to nudge the Israelis and Palestinians toward direct peace talks, if both sides commit. Obama said both sides want a peaceful solution.

"Both sides have to create an environment, a climate that will be conducive to an actual breakthrough," the US president said.

Obama reiterated that that means the Israelis must curb settlement construction in disputed territories and that the Palestinians must make progress on security, among other issues.

Obama said the US is fully committed to seeing the effort through.

"We will continue to work side by side with you as well as the Israelis," Obama said to Abbas.

The meeting came little more than a week after Israel's May 31 raid on a flotilla hoping to break the blockade turned deadly. Nine men in the flotilla were killed, including eight Turks and a Turkish American.

Israel says its soldiers opened fire only after they were set upon by a mob of pro-Palestinian activists. The activists and their supporters blame Israel, saying its commandos began shooting unnecessarily.

Obama said the incident was a "tragedy" and that a "better approach" is needed in Gaza. He called for a "new conceptual framework" for Israel's three-year-old blockade of Gaza.

"It's important that we get all the facts," he said. "What we also know is that the situation in Gaza is unsustainable."

'Flotilla probe after Iran vote'
By HERB KEINON
06/09/2010 21:26

PM says IDF 'Marmara' commandos to face internal investigation only.
Israel has yet to formally announce the make-up of a probe to investigate the flotilla episode not because of US displeasure with the proposed format, but rather because of a desire by both countries to wait until after the UN Security Council voted on Iran sanctions, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met again Wednesday with his inner cabinet, a forum known as the septet, and discussed the probe, but yet again delayed formally announcing the establishment of a committee.

'Israel agrees to ease blockade'
UNSC approves new Iran sanctions

Government officials said the US was focused on getting the Iran sanctions it had been working on for five months through the Security Council, and did not want anything to come out just prior to the vote that might have shifted the vote of the 15 countries on the council.

The sanctions resolution passed by a vote of 12 - 2, with Lebanon abstaining. Turkey and Brazil were the two countries that voted against.

Netanyahu - in his first public comments on the nature of the probe - said at an economic conference in Tel Aviv Wednesday that it would not have the authority to question soldiers involved in the incident, and would also deal with questions about how extremists made their way to the deck of the ship with weapons and pockets full of cash.

"We are consulting with a number of actors in the international community concerning the suitable investigative process that will lead to a revelation of the facts regarding the flotilla," Netanyahu said.

The Prime Minister said that he, his ministers and the chief of general staff, would appear before the committee, but that the soldiers involved in the incident would not appear before the probe.

"The IDF will be the only body that will, as always, be able to investigate our fighters," he said. "That is exactly the way it is done in the armies of our friends in the world, and that is how we will do it as well."

The IDF has established a panel of military experts, headed by Maj.-Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, which has already began investigating the flotilla operation.

"I ask that all the truth come to light," Netanyahu said, of the as-yet-to-be-established judicial probe. "Therefore, the investigation must include answers to questions that some in the international community want to ignore. Who was behind the extremists on the deck of the ship? Who funded the group, how did axes, clubs, knives and other cold weapons find their way to the deck? Why were there large amounts of money in the pockets of those on the deck, and who was going to get that money? The world needs to know the full picture, and we will make sure the whole picture comes to light."

Israeli officials acknowledged that Israel was still in discussion with the US about the probe, but that even had there been full agreement before Wednesday's UN vote on Iran sanctions, Israel would not have announced the establishment of the probe so as not to shift the focus from the UN.

The septet is widely believed to have agreed upon the establishment of a committee made up of jurists and diplomats, with the participation of two international observers - one from the US and the other from an as yet unnamed country -- to look into the legality of Israel's naval blockade, and the manner in which Israel prevented the flotilla from reaching Gaza.

The septet's decision to establish the committee will most likely go to the cabinet for final approval.

One Israeli official said that the committee that will be established will conform to criteria established by the UN Security Council presidential statement issued last week after the incident. That statement called for "a full investigation into the matter" and it called for a "prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards." It stopped short, however, of calling for an international investigation, as Turkey has demanded.

Nationalist Russian Israelis Mock Leftist Rally in Tel Aviv

by Malkah Fleisher
A recent leftist rally against a Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square was crashed by proud nationalist Russian Israelis who aimed at making a mockery of the event.

Hundreds of people congregated on Saturday afternoon against Jewish Judea and Samaria, and in solidarity with Arab residents of Hamas-controlled Gaza and the recent terrorist-laden Gaza "aid" flotilla. The rally, called "The Government is Drowning Us All," was planned prior to the flotilla incident, but co-opted the issue on the day of the march.

However, the Sabbath-day event did not go off without a hitch. A large group of secular nationalist Russian Israelis infiltrated their march, holding banners in English and Russian ridiculing the leftists.

The nationalists, who were otherwise indistinguishable from the rest of the protestors, held signs including "We'll Stab for Peace", "We'll make the world abandon reason", "We Believe in blah-blah-blah", "What the hell am I doing here?" and "Don't mess with the Zohan", according to a report in the popular blog, The Muqata.

The rally against Jewish Judea and Samaria also witnessed a strong overt counter-rally of other citizens who were infuriated by the nature and timing of the Rabin Square protest.

Dozens of supporters of Jewish strength in Israel tried to disrupt the event, and may even have thrown a smoke grenade. Standing opposite a portion of the rally, counter-protestors sang slogans in support of Israeli Navy SEALS and sang Israel's national anthem, HaTikva.

They also shouted "traitors", "go to Gaza", and "terror supporters" at participants, from behind a blockade of police officers and riot police. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

Tourism to Israel: 6th Consecutive Record-Breaking Month

by Hillel Fendel
Buoyed by continued monthly growth in incoming tourism to Israel, Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov of the Israel Our Home party says Israel has to continue building more hotel rooms and tourist attractions.

"The increased demand," Misezhnikov says, "together with the growing interest of investors, means we must re-evaluate our supply. the construction of thousands of hotel rooms and tourist attractions."

He was speaking againt the backdrop of the latest report issued by the Central Bureau of Statistics, which includes these numbers:

309,000 tourists visited Israel in May 2010 - an all-time record for the month of May - and an increase of 4% over May 2008, which was Israel's record year for tourism. 1.4 million tourists have visited Israel since the beginning of the year, an increase of 11% over the same period in 2008. Of these, 1.1 million remained in Israel for at least one night - an increase of 5% over 2008.

"In accordance with the Tourism Ministry's three-year plan," Misezhnikov said, "an additional million tourists will have visited Israel in 2012, in total four million tourists and business people. We must be ready to offer them an attractive tourism solution... Competition with other countries in the region will intensify significantly in the coming months and years and, in order to compete, the ministry will allocate a significant portion of its budget to helping entrepreneurs."

Specifically, he said, the ministry will allocate a half-billion shekels to assist in hotel projects, which "will lead to the construction of thousands of hotel rooms that will contribute hundreds of millions of shekels and thousands of jobs to the economy."

As part of this policy, the Tourism Ministry's Investment Administration approved on Tuesday grants worth 65 million shekels to five hotel projects in Jerusalem and the Galilee. The five are the Waldorf Astoria and a boutique hotel in Ein Kerem, both in Jerusalem, and HaGoshrim Hotel, Ein Hahula, and Prima Tiberias in the Galilee.

The Capital Investment in Tourism Administration moved two weeks ago to the Tourism Ministry from the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry. The new framework is designed to reduce bureaucracy facing Israeli and international investors and entrepreneurs who wish to invest in hotels in Israel.

In addition, the National Tourism Outline Plan (NOP 12), developed by the Tourism Ministry over the last decade, has been completed and will be submitted for cabinet approval shortly. The plan seeks to ensure the preservation of land reserves for tourism, attractions and hotels in the coming years. It thus sends an important message to Israeli and international investors that Israel is an attractive country for investment in hotels. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

Buraq Obama al Husseini's $400 Million "Down Payment" on the United States' "Commitment to Palestinians in Gaza"

The Enemedia is reporting:

President Barack Obama said Wednesday the United States was to unveil a 400-million-dollar civilian aid package for the Palestinians....

This must be related to the President's announcement May 27 that

The President will welcome Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to the White House on June 9.

Further investigation reveals this morning's "Fact Sheet" from The White House:

Today, the President announced that the United States will move forward with approximately $400 million in initiatives and commitments for the West Bank and Gaza

that will help increase access to clean drinking water,

create jobs, build schools,

expand the availability of affordable housing,

and address critical health and infrastructure needs.

These initiatives result directly from the

advocacy and guidance

of President Mahmoud Abbas

and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad,

whose leadership

is making a difference ... in Gaza as well as the West Bank.

The President has described the situation in Gaza as unsustainable, and it demands a significant change of strategy.

While we work with our partners in the Palestinian Authority, Israel, Egypt, and the international community to put such a strategy in place,

these projects represent a
down payment
on the
United States' commitment

to Palestinians in Gaza

who deserve a better life

and expanded opportunities,

and the chance to take part in building

a viable, independent state of Palestine,

together with those who live in the West Bank.

The projects announced today include:

• A $240 million investment by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) in the AMAL mortgage finance program in the West Bank, which is designed to increase homeownership by offering long-term mortgages at fixed- and variable rates.

• $75 million in funding through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the Palestinian Authority's work to improve infrastructure throughout the West Bank and Gaza.

• $10 million in USAID-funded activities aimed at enhancing the Palestinian private sector's competitiveness.

• $40 million to support UNRWA's Emergency Appeal for Gaza and the West Bank, which will help improve educational and health services, increase job creation, and repair shelters in Gaza, while also addressing core humanitarian needs in the West Bank.

• $14.5 million in USAID projects for school rehabilitation, small-scale agriculture, the repair of a hospital facility and other community infrastructure in Gaza.

• $10 million for the construction of five new UNRWA schools in Gaza.

• $5 million to start nine USAID-funded projects to repair water distribution and wastewater collection systems in Gaza.

Several months ago, in a comment on this website, I referred to the Obama administration as an American version of the Wise Men of Chelm. I hereby apologize to the Wise Men. This administration is in a class by itself. The Wise Men were foolish, even --sometimes -- stupid. But this administration is suicidal. We aren't pouring money down a rat hole; we are pouring money into a criminal enterprise that will one day -- if it gets the opportunity -- overthrow the Constitutional government of the United States and replace it with Sharia government, or -- more aptly -- Sharia oppression. We are -- to use the old adage -- giving the Palestinians and, by extension, all other jihadis, the rope with which to hang us. Never in their wildest dreams did the Wise Men of Chelm do anything so feckless or so foolhardy. Whether Obama is wittingly or unwittingly working to destroy our country no longer matters. What does matter is that this and similar acts of craziness WILL destroy our country. The long list of announced "projects" is nothing less than farcical. The money -- all of it -- will be used for only two purposes: to line the pockets of the venal Palestinian "leadership," and to buy weaponry that will ultimately be turned against the West, starting but not ending with Israel. Madness has been defined as 'the human mind in ruins." This particular madness will leave Western civilization in ruins.

Just so I understand. We are going to borrow another $400 million from Communist China, adding to our immense debt, to send more money to a terrorist entity who vows to destroy our only ally in the Middle East. Sure sounds like a plan to me. I guess I am not smart enough to understand international diplomacy, or fiscal policy. Pass the Kool-Aid, my friends. As the theme song from MASH says, "Suicide is easy".

Iran Provoking Israel and Mocking the Civilized World
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad salutes the media with a clenched fist in Istanbul Turkey, Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Ahmadinejad called the Security Council the "most un-democratic" body of the United Nations.

from OneJerusalem:

There is a news report that Iran is sending three supply ships to challenge the Gaza blockade. The tyrannical regime is doing this under the guise of providing medical assistance to the supposedly beleaguered people in Gaza on ships flying the Red Crescent flag (The Islamic version of the Red Cross.) This provocative act is being organized with the militant government of Turkey. To add fuel to this development, Iran's Revolutionary Guard is planning on sending military escort ships.

Given the barbaric nature of the Iranian regime, this stunt (that could develop into a very dangerous confrontation) is comparable to Nazi Germany sending "aid" to the victims in the Warsaw Ghetto.

The Iranians, the Turks, and Hamas have the opportunity to exploit the international stage because the civilized world, led by the Obama Administration, has allowed them to behave badly while it has focused every form of criticism on Israel. That Iran that is being economically raped by its own Revolutionary Guard makes laughable its new role of savior of the Palestinian people. It also is another demonstration of the failure of the Obama administration's policy of engaging the tyrants of Tehran.

On the geopolitical front this is one more move by Iran to gain supremacy on Israel's borders by currying favor with the Arab street. These developments heighten the threats against Israel, the United States, and the West.

For anyone who wants to know the truth about the humanitarian situation in Gaza we strongly recommend reading the new report issued by the Jerusalem Center. In short there is no humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, where's Waldo?

There's no humanitarian crisis in Gaza -- but there is a Haman-itarian crisis, a crisis caused by people who are hell-bent on exterminating Jews -- all Jews, every Jew, anywhere. Interestingly, the first Haman was a Persian; the current Haman-itarian crisis emanates from the entire Muslim world, but is -- at the moment -- centered in Persia. I wonder how many, if any, of the Haman wannabes in modern-day Persia know the story of the original Haman. If any of them do, it should give them pause. Like them, the original Haman dreamed of making the Jewish people extinct; instead, he himself was extinguished. History may be about to repeat itself. Let us pray.
